4.]Michael Jordan

[This little post on my blog will come so very often, maybe even a few times a week. I draw inspiration from many people and a wide variety of people as well. I think the key to expanding your mind is to broaden your horizons, and without doing that I feel as if you're depriving yourself of a truly happy life.]

If you're familiar with basketball, or streetwear, or life.. you know Michael Jordan. One of the worlds greatest athletes ever, as well as a pioneering entrepreneur in the world of streetwear. He played close to 20 years, mostly with the Chicago Bulls. He was known for his high flying dunks and amazing clutch play, as well as winning six NBA Titles, 5 MVP Awards, 14 All Star apperances and 2 Slam Dunk Titles. Arguably the greatest player ever. He also caused controversy in 1985 when his first sneaker, the Air Jordan I's were released. They were originally banned by the NBA because it wasn't the team shoe, but the ban was lifted, and began the begining of a sneaker revolution. Today, the Jordan Brand is one of the most recognizable ones in the world of fashion. Alot of brands have tried to mirror the Jordan brand, but nothing comes close. On top of owning The Jordan Brand, he is now the majority owner of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, being the first former player to have majority stake in a team. This is the same Michael Jordan who couldn't even make his schools varsity squad his junior year, the same guy the Rockets and Blazer's passed over, the guy they thought would be marginal at best. If his accolades off and on the court doesn't inspire you to put your all into everything, then i don't know what will. Michael Jordan is truly an inspiration to many.

R.I.P Nujabes

February 19, 1974 – February 26, 2010

It's crazy how I did not know one of my favorite DJ's of all time passed. Jun Seba, aka Nujabes is one of the greatest minds some hip hop heads have never heard of. Most people who are familiar with anime may have heard of him, but for the most part he remained popular within the indie community. His passing came to me as a complete shock, and he will be missed. According to his label, Hydeout Productions, some of his work will be released posthumously. His music was definitely apart of my transition from the mainstream into real hip hop, he will be missed.

Now, compared to the rest of the people i've talked about so far, this guy is a relatively new face for most of you. If you've never heard of him or seen his work, you'll be amazed and instantly inspired when you do. I've been following him ever since i saw a post on HypeBeast about some guy skating his Air Yeezy's. I thought, if this guy is gonna skate a pair of Yeezy's, he's gotta have reasons to back it up. For one, this is one of the most open minded persons i've ever met in my young 20 years of living. Lucky for me, i met the guy twice. We connected out here in Charlotte the first time for an Anthony Hamilton concert (season 2 of his Maestro Knows video-blog), and once again in Atlanta. Sitting down with him and listening to him speak about what he's been doing and what he plans on doing is just amazing. His outlook on life is dope and real as hell. To fully understand what i mean, you're gonna have to watch an episode or two.. it's great stuff. Makes all other bloggers wanting to step their game up.

If you have no idea who this man is above me or what he did, then you're a little slow. Haha, sike nah but really, Bob Marley is, was, and always will be a legend. Not only did he leave a lasting impact on the world of music, he left one on the world as well. His songs were about equality, and peace and love and having a great time, and not to mention the ever so lovely ganja. Unfortunatly, like J-Dilla, his live was cut too short. I wish I was around to experience his genius. His lyrics were far beyond the times, every track he created was a hit. And each one had a message. He was also a member of the Rastafari Movement, something i've been reading up on alot lately. His Rasta beliefs didn't show into his music until after his time with The Wailers. Today, he is remembered along with names of other amazing artists, Morrison, Hendrix, etc.. this man will always be remembered to me as someone who looked at life as something you should not take too serious, have fun.. don't let the "man" bring you down.. love everyone, thats the key to peace and freedom.

1.] J-Dilla

Decided to begin the first step of a movement I hope reaches the masses. This little post on my blog will come so very often, maybe even a few times a week. I draw inspiration from many people and a wide variety of people as well. I think the key to expanding your mind is to broaden your horizons, and without doing that I feel as if you're depriving yourself of a truly happy life. With that being said, let me talk about my number one inspiration for most of everything I do, James Dewitt Yancey, better known as J-Dilla.

J Dilla was, and in my mind still is one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time. We worked with artists from the likes of Common, A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, Madlib, MF Doom, and Wu-Tang just to name a very small percentage. This man fused every type of instrument and sound you can think of into his music, and it takes a very open minded induvidual to truly understand his work. His most amazing work, released three days before his passing from lupus in 2006, The Donuts EP is by far his most genius work ever. Every instrumental included some of the most amazing samples, jazz-infused instrumentals and just an amazing plethora of musical ideas. But this is only a small section of his musical catelog. After his passing, his legend grew, and artists who had no idea who this Detroit producer/emcee was began sampling and using his music. It's a shame that it took this long for people to recognize his genius. Dilla is the sole reason I fell in love with hip hop. If it wasn't for A Tribe Called Quest's Scenario, I may not have found out about this man. To sum this up, J Dilla is the reason i'm into hip hop, the reason I wake up every morning and am blessed to have great health, and the reason I stay open minded to everything in this world. Thank You J-Dilla, i've never met you before, but i love you. J-Dilla truly changed my life..

J.Rocc For Supreme Take 2 Mixtape

One of my favorite dee jays ever, J.Rocc from the legendary Beat Junkies. This dope mixtape featuring sounds from many different genres, as well as J.Rocc's version of some of the late J-Dilla's masterpieces. I already have my copy on my way to me now, this is definitely worth peeping.

MY 2 CENTS: geneology

I think it's awesome when people know EXACTLY what heritage they are. For alot of people, this isn't as easy. For most African-Americans, the only records they'll have of ancestors is from records slave owners had, if they even had any. For people of other nationalities, this is alot easier. I was watching t.v. and Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates was on. He's really good with tracing back family genology. One of the coolest things I heard he did was find a book written thousands of years ago by an ancestor of Yo Yo Ma.

Being able to know where you came from is amazing. All I know is that on my fathers grandfathers side, i'm West Indian and on my grandmothers i'm white, black and indian. My mom is full blooded Italian but I don't know much about her. I think being able to trace your families geneology is an amazing thing, and if you're able to do it you should look into it. And if you have records of past ancestors, keep them and continue to pass them on to future generations.. everyone should know where they came from.

Remembering A Legend

R.I.P Biggie
Biggie is definitely one of the first people I can think of wen it comes to the egnings of my love of hip hop. All of his songs were and still are dope as fuck. One of the only rappers that can rap about something he actually did. Tragically, his life was cut short. If he had lived longer, or were still alive, he'd definitely be at the top of the game.. the Jordan of hip hop. Don't get me wrong, he's in that Mount Rushmore of MC's, but he died before he even REACHED his prime. To sum it all up, if there was a hip hop exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum, Biggie would be one of the few people they'd have up there. Rest In Peace to a true legend, we'll all do something in your rememberance! Biggie blasted all day in my house :]

My.Favorite.Sweater

My Favorite Sweater. Did some digging through the closet in my basement and came across this beauty tucked underneath a Yankee's 2000 World Series hoodie and a Marlboro crew neck. This was the one that caught my eye. Looking at it just makes me glad I am what I am. I wish I had found this during black history month, but it's all good. I've always been fascinated with African-American history. In school they'd rather teach you about the Holocaust but not about something that happened on our own soil. Now don't get me wrong, the Holocaust was absolutely horrible, and everyone should be taught about it, but slavery and oppression happened on this land right here. They do not spend enough time teaching about it in school, everyone should know what happened and how Black people played an important role in todays society. Hell, when I first moved to North Carolina my house was on an old slave plantation. People are so blind and ignorant to the past, bet you didn't know a black man invented the traffic light? Yeah, we offered alot to this "great country". But now a days, black people are put into stereotypes and honestly, you can't get mad at it. As a whole, black people are very ungrateful. We take advantage of everything, we give ourselves a bad name. Shocking fact, 1 out of 2 black teenage females have some sort of STD.. yes, this is a true statistic. We are the number one race in America and the rest of the world thats infected with the AIDS virus... yet, we can't seem to put aside our pride and get tested. It's time for African Americans as a whole to wake up and end these stereotypes once and for all. I don't know about you guys, but I strive to do this everyday.. wake up and do the same.

MY 2 CENTS: materialism

I myself, used to buy the most expensive shirt or shoes on the rack just for the name on it. I fell in love with owning the most in style brands, blowing whatever money I could get my hands on. Mind you, I've only had one job my entire life. $100 for a BBC t-shirt, check. $300 for some rare Nike SB's, check. You name it, i blew my loot on it. I've done alot of growing up these past few years, if you knew me back in high school, you'd see how far along i've come. Now, i could care less about what i wear or own. I JUST got an XBOX this past Christmas, the last pair of shoes i bought were a pair of $40 Toms, which i plan on wearing the hell out of. I wear nothing but blank tees and thermal shirts.. I could seriously give two fucks whats in right now. I used to be obsessed with Stussy, Nike SB, Diamond Supply. Now, when i see people around with it, i laugh. They pay a ridiculous amount for clothes with shitty quality, don't buy something just because it's hot. An old friend of mine back in New Jersey has a brand of his own, it's called Award Tour. He stresses that originality is the key to setting yourself apart from everyone else. The name on the shirt should not define the person you are. The next time you're out, buying your shit for the summer, think about it. Would rather pay more for less, or less for more? I know if i bought a $200 hoodie, i'm gonna wear that shit everyday until the summer starts. Be practical guys, save your money for more important things.

Told myself I wouldn't turn this into a music blog, but I definitely gotta support the homie. I wouldn't post this if i didn't think it was worth peeping. Homie of mine from out here in Charlotte took some of the late producer/genius J-Dilla's beats, and spit some very impressive rhymes over them. Definitely worth peeping, especially with the state of hip hop being the way it is. Local talent never goes unnoticed, keep it up bro!
