Every year, everyone and their mother comes up with a New Years Resolution. And probably 1 out of 10 people that come up with one actually follow through with it. I for one am guilty of this, but really.. who follows through with these? Usually, we pick the most unachieveable goals and tell everyone we'll follow through with it. Then, a week later, everything stops. No more gym visits, you're going back to Shell to get your Red's. I can't say i know a songle person that will follow through with their resolutions. I'd rather not make a promise to myself that I know i'm not gonna follow through with something that won't be attainable. Instead, i'll make smaller resolutions. Like making sure I keep my GPA in the 3's, and keep things sane around my house. As much as i'd love to go to the gym every other day and come out looking like Broly , I know for a fact that I wont stay motivated long enough to want to continue on with that. So keep that in mind folks, when you decide to create a resolution for yourself, make sure it's more attainable than anything. Enjoy your New Years!

END OF 2009 MUSIC REVIEW:

This year has been filled with alot of bullshit music wise, but I also came across a bunch of good shit this year. Here’s my list of the 10 best, in my opinion of course:

10.) Wale:”Attention Deficit" - The first couple times I heard this album, i was like what the hell is this. I was disapointed, because it sounded nothing like his mixtapes. But then, lyrically this is one of his best projects. 90210 is my shit.

9.) Stalley:”MadStalley” - This guy is a GFCNY affiliate and this entire mixtape was amazing. It had the chillest beats over some very impressive ryhmes. One of my favorite mixtapes by anyone really.

8.) BJ the Chicago Kid:”The New Begining” - This is an R&B EP from Chicago’s very own. Found out about him by watching Maestro Knows, he’s got a great voice and I can honestly say you guys will be hearing him on the radio next year.

7.) FENCES:”The Ultimate Puke EP” - This is one of the best indie projects i’ve heard in a veryvery long time. SO mellow and chill, this is definitely one of my favorites this year and I can’t wait for the album to drop, no word on the date though.

6.) Oceano:”Depths” - TRUE metalheads will know who this is. Chicago’s own Oceano is a 4 set group with a sound unlike most. They’re just as chill as they are talented, and they have some of the best breakdowns i’ve ever heard.

5.) Dom Kennedy:”Future Street/Drug Souds” - Psh, this wasn’t even his best mixtape and it’s still amazing. Coming out of Los Angeles with a sound that kind of reminds me of Ice Cube, this dude will be blowing up next yea no doubt.

4.) Mos Def:”The Ecstatic” - I was hyping this album up long before it came out, and i’m pretty sure i was the first person to pick it up. Mos Def has been on the forefront of concious rap for so long, and this album doesn’t disapoint. He has alot of cameos on here with heads like Slick Rick and Talib Kweli(BLACKSTAR, GET BACK TOGETHER!). If you havent peeped this yet, you need to.

3.) Atmosphere:”Leak At Will” - This is easily my favorite project by him since GodLovesUgly. Atmosphere’s songs are like stories, with the illest beats ever. This is a free EP too, but shit.. what music isn’t free nowadays. If you haven’t heard this, i seriously suggest doing so.

2.) Drake:”So Far Gone” - Now, i’m sure most of us ae tired of hearing tracks from this mixtape, but just hear me out. I know for the first month or so, I was bumping this shit hella hard. EVERY FUCKING TRACK, was just epic. We’ve ALL fell on the Drake train at one point. His music as of late is too commercial for my liking, but this will go down as one of the best mixtapes ever.

1. Animal Collective:”Merriweather Post Pavillion” Love this group. This album wasn’t like their previous projects, but by far it was my favorite album of the year. I can’t wait to see them live, whenever that comes!

for the first time ever

i laughed with my mother.
for the first time ever, i shared stories with my mother.
for the first time ever, i began a reationship with my mother.

i'm 20 years old, and i've only seen her a handful of times. she recently moved to durham, nc from her home in michigan to be closer to me, my brother and my father. when i found out my father was going up to durham just to see her, i was pretty upset. my mother has done absolutely nothing for me my entire life. barely any phone calls, and when she did come to visit, i didn't feel like i knew her. i went 20 years without really havng a other figure besides my grandmother. i've never had a mother to ask if i'm ok, or take me to the doctors, or walk me across the football field, none of that. i looked at the pictures she had from the last time i saw her.. it was so long ago. i fought back tears so hard when she opened the door. i wanted to yall at her, call her all the names in the book. but something told me not to. maybe it's just my kind heart.. or maybe it's just the fact that God tells us to forgive one another. i figure she had her reasons for pretty much abandoning me. whatever it is, i forgive her. thats my mother, the person who brought me into this world. i'm sure i'll see her more; my pops and her are working stuff out. sure, this shit will not be easy.. but it's worth a shot.

HENDRIX: The Movie

If you're familiar with HBO's The Wire, then Wood Harris, the actor who portrays Avon Barksdale is Jimi. Vivica A. Fox is in this too, and you know black men love Vivica. Anyway, enjoy this.. I know I did! :]

Rastafarian

Rastafarians believe in the Judeo-Christian God, whom they call Jah. In general, Rastafarian beliefs are based in Judaism and Christianity, with an emphasis on Old Testament laws and prophecies and the Book of Revelation. Allegorical meaning is often sought in the Holy Piby.

Jah was manifested on earth as Jesus, who Rastas believe was black, and Emperor Haile Selassie. Selassie is referred to as His Imperial Majesty or H.I.M. (pronounced “him”) and believed to still be alive - his death was a hoax and he lives in protection awaiting the Day of Judgment. Selassie is worshipped as divine. (Scriptural proof texts include Revelation 5:2-5, 17:14, 19:6, 22:16, Ezekiel 30, Psalm 9, 18, 68, 76, 87:4, Isaiah 9.) Rastafarians also honor Old Testament prophets like Moses and Elijah.

Rastafarians do not believe in an afterlife, 5 but instead look to Africa (called “Zion”) as a heaven on earth. True Rastas are believed to be immortal, both physically and spiritually, a concept called “everliving.”

An important Rastafarian concept is “I and I,” which is said instead of “you and I.” It emphasizes the oneness between humanity and God as well as the equality of all humans.

Another central concept is Babylon, which refers to the white power structure of Europe and the Americas. Rastas seek to resist Babylon, which once cruelly enslaved blacks and still continue to hold them down through poverty, illiteracy, inequality, and trickery. The greed and conceit of Babylon is contrasted with the humble simplicity and naturalness of the Rastas.

Practices

Rastafarians are perhaps best known for their religious use of marijuana, which grows plentifully in Jamaica. Rastas know it as ganja, the holy herb, Iley or callie, and believe it was given by God. Scriptural support is found especially in Psalm 104:14: “He causeth the grass for the cattle and herb for the service of man.” Other texts interpreted to refer to cannibis include Genesis 3:18, Exodus 10:12, and Proverbs 15:17. In addition to ritual use, Rastas also use marijuana for medicinal purposes, applying it to a variety of ailments including colds. 5

Marijuana is used primarily during the two main Rastafari rituals: reasonings and nyabingi. The reasoning is an informal gathering at which a small group of Rastas smoke ganja and engage in discussion. The ritual begins when one person lights the pipe, or “chalice,” and recites a short prayer while all other participants bow their heads. The pipe is then passed around the circle until all of the people have smoked. The reasoning ends when the participants depart one by one.

The nyabinghi, or binghi for short, is a dance held on Rasta holidays and special occasions (see below). These dances can last for several days and bring together hundreds of Rastafarians from all over Jamaica. They camp in tents on land owned by the host Rastas. Formal dancing takes place at night in a tabernacle especially set up for the occasion. The Rastas sing and dance until the early hours of the morning. In the daytime, they “rest and reason.”6

There are several Rasta holidays, most of which center around events in the life of Emperor Haile Selassie. The most important celebrations are:

November 2 - the coronation of Selassie
January 6 - ceremonial birthday of Selassie
April 21 - Selassie’s visit to Jamaica
July 23 - Selassie’s personal birthday
August 1 - emancipation from slavery
August 17 - Marcus Garvey’s birthday
One of the most visible practices of Rastafarians is the wearing of one’s hair in dreadlocks. Dreadlocks have several purposes and layers of meaning for Rastafarians, including:

the biblical command not to cut one’s hair (Leviticus 21:5)
the appearance of the lion’s mane, representing strength, Africa, Ethiopia, and the Lion of Judah
naturalness and simplicity, which are associated with Africa
the Rasta’s roots in Africa
The other main Rasta symbol besides dreadlocks, are the colors of red, gold and green. Red stands for the triumphant church of the Rastas as well as the blood of the martyrs in the black struggle for liberation. Gold represents the wealth of their African homeland and green symbolizes Ethiopia’s beauty and lush vegetation. Black is often also included, representing the color of the Africans. Another important symbol is the Lion of Judah, which represents Haile Selassie as the King of Kings, Africa, and strength.

The most observant Rastas follow a dietary law called Ital. Ital food is food which is completely natural (not canned and free of chemicals and preservatives) and eaten as raw as possible. Old Testament prohibitions against pork and shellfish are part of Ital; most Rastafarians are vegatarians or vegans. Coffee and milk are also rejected as unnatural.

Rastafarians reject the use of alcohol, since it is a fermented chemical that does not belong in the temple of the body and it makes a person stupid, thereby playing into the hands of white leaders. This is contrasted with the holy herb of marijuana, which is natural and believed by Rastas to open their mind and assist in reasoning.

"You may not be her first, her last, or her only. She loved before she may love again. But if she loves you now, what else matters? She’s not perfect - you aren’t either, and the two of you may never be perfect together but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break - her heart. So don’t hurt her, don’t change her, don’t analyze and don’t expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she’s not there” — Bob Marley.

The Four Agreements

1. Be Impeccable with your Word
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don’t Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don’t Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

I've been reading so much lately. I need to make a trip to the library, because I really want to read up and study other religons and cultures. I'm finding the simplest things in life right now so fascinating and I love it.

New Maestro Knows!

Maestro Knows - Episode 2 (Mr. Cartoon) from Maestro Knows on Vimeo.

I Failed, For A Good Reason:

Chances are, if you're reading this blog regularly(thank you if you are), then your familiar with old music blog. I'd post songs and ep's, mostly hip-hop,with updates just about every hour. I got kind of tired of that, and started this one to be more personal than anything. I told myself i wouldn't post any type of music releases. Well, I lied!

Through MySpace(lol), i found out about a talented musician from Massachusetts named Christopher Mansfield. He's currently working on an acoustic project called FENCES and relesed an EP earlier this year called "The Ultmate Puke EP". This is some of the best music ive heard in a long while. I know that most of my followers are looking at more hip-hop or rap tha anything, but honestly, give this a try. It's a really impressive EP that i actually have on repeat right this second. Well, it's time for me to get back onto my other projects, untill next time folks!

13th Witness
Everyone knows how much of an art nut I am. I can even find something positive to say about someones work that normally wouldn't appeal to me. I guess you can say I have a true appreciaiton for real art. Anyways, i know some of you Hypebeast may know EXACTLY who 13th Witness is, but if not.. let me show you. 13th Witness is a professional photographer who shoots anything from comercials to promos for athletes. First came to see this man's work by mearly surfing the net. I've followed the work of Atiba Jefferson and Eric Acosta for some time now, and I'm pretty confident that I can add 13th Witness to this list. To see more of his work, hit his Flikr and Vimeo accounts.

been TOO happy lately

i'd like to take the time out

to apologize to anyone i've ever done wrong.

ex's, my dudes in NJ/NC, i'm sorry.. for real

i've done some fucked up shit in my short 20 years of living, but honestly i don't regret anything i've done.. as fucked up as that may sound. i'm taking it all in as a huge learning experience for me; something i had to expeience in order to grow up a bit. to the girls that i have played lately, yeah you know who you guys are, i want to say i'm really sorry and mean that so sincerely and truthfully. NONE of you guys deserved this, out of all the girls i dated, you guys treated me right. each of you offered an amazing insight on life to me that i will ALWAYS treasure. so to those ladies, i'm sorry. i would love to still have you guys in my life at some point or one point in life, but trust me.. i understand if you dont.

and to my boys, who i definatly seem to underappreciate and take for granted, i wanna apologize as well. i met some real cool as dudes lately, and you all have been nothing but great to me. picking me up when i couldn't score my peeps car, paying for shit when i didn't have enough, taking me from A to B without hesitation, and the free weed haha. i'm sorry dudes, and i truly mean this. right now, theres no way for me to repay you guys, or truley show my appreciation for all of you. just know that theres changes being made, and it's not gonna be easy.. but damn it's worth a try.

the past 2-3 weeks has been a hellafied learning experience for me. i always think about the one person who would always be there for me, and be able to bring me up when i'm down, my grandfather. i thought about how disapointed he'd be in me, but also how happy he'd be if i just go back to the normal me. it's like, one small mistake turned into a huge nightmare, all because i let previous experiences influence my decisions. i've made more mistakes in my social life this past month than i have in.. ever

i love you all, and hope you take this.. letter as seriously as i am.

MUCHlove,
edison.
